While other PCs in this price range may perform better with apps that target multicore CPUs, this Dell offers everything we expect in a desktop for day-to-day use.... Asus RT-N16 - The Asus RT-N16 is a great, fun router for networking enthusiasts who want to use it with third-party, open-source firmware, such as Tomato or DD-WRT. However, everyone else should wait until Asus provides a more stable version of the firmware.... Apple iMac summer 2010 (Intel Core i5 2.8GHz, 27 inch) - Apple's new $1,999 iMac comes with a faster CPU and a new graphics card, helping this 27-inch all-in-one desktop stay as competitive in performance as it already was in screen size. Despite the still-frustrating absence of an HDMI port, we have no qualms recommending this system for work or play.... Samsung Q430-11 - An impressively designed surprise, the Samsung Q430-11 is a feature-packed, fast laptop that looks more expensive than it is.... Dell Inspiron i570-7034PBK - The Dell Inspiron i570-7034PBK's mediocre configuration and generic tower are hardly offset by the HDMI port and Wi-Fi card extras you get in the bundle. If you're on a tight budget, we recommend picking up the cheaper, more resourceful HP Pavilion p6510y instead.... HP Pavilion dv6-3055dx - Be it for home, school, or the office, the HP Pavilion dv6-3055dx is a decent mainstream laptop with a few issues that keep it from being as good in reality as it is on paper.... Toshiba Satellite A665-S6050 - The Toshiba Satellite A665-S6050 is a smart choice for home use thanks to its outstanding audio output, Intel Wireless Display, and roomy 16-inch display.... HP Pavilion p6510y - The HP Pavilion p6510y midtower desktop is a solid computer that makes quick work in a multitasking environment thanks to its quad-core AMD CPU, and the external connections give video editors the upper hand in terms of speed and versatility. The p6510y deserves our recommendation, but if Photoshop and Dreamweaver aren't part of your daily routine, you can trade the HP's multicore speed for extra hard-drive space and save a couple bucks with a competing Asus system.... HP Envy 14 - HP's updated Envy 14 is a well-built high-end laptop with impressive components and a surprisingly reasonable price.... HP G62-225DX - Poor battery life and a stiff mouse button sour the deal for the otherwise attractive and affordable HP G62-225DX.... HP Pavilion P6540Y - HP's uncommonly hued Pavilion p6540y offers a competitive set of features for a midtower desktop. The quad-core AMD chip should power you through light-duty multimedia editing faster than competing Intel-based systems. Upgraders should stay away, and there are faster general-productivity PCs available for less, but we can recommend this PC to those in need of its particular quad-core charms.... HP Pavilion dv5-2045dx - The HP Pavilion dv5-2045dx is a respectable mainstream laptop, but it's only a good deal if you need Microsoft Office and antivirus software.... Acer Aspire One D260-23797 - Acer's Aspire D260 is slim and lightweight, even for a Netbook, but its slightly faster processor doesn't lead to better performance.... Asus U33Jc-A1 (bamboo) - A welcome change of pace from the usual glossy plastic and brushed-metal laptop styles, the bamboo-clad Asus U33Jc-A1 looks great and also packs in some very useful technology.... Lenovo IdeaCentre A300 40181OU - Design fans in particular will appreciate Lenovo's unique all-in-one that serves best as a dedicated, Web-based home entertainment PC for a small room. The distinct look requires some trade-offs, particularly in performance and the lack of an optical drive, but if you're willing to sacrifice function for a bit of form, you'll find the IdeaCentre A300 charming and generally capable.... Dell Inspiron i14R-2265MRB - With Windows 7 Professional and built-in WiMax, the Dell i14R-2265MRB is a retail laptop angling for the professional market, and as such might be a good option for a budget small-business machine.... Dell Inspiron i560-2050NBK - The Dell Inspiron i560-2050NBK has little to recommend it other than its semicapable video playback chops. It's not really a bad desktop, but with similar PCs available for significantly less, this Dell just doesn't offer enough value to earn our recommendation.... Dell Inspiron M101z - Dell's latest take on the Mini line is a dual-core AMD-powered 11-inch system that leaves Netbooks in the dust in terms of both power and price.... Asus K50IJ-BNC5 - The Asus K501J-BCN5 serves up long battery life, a backlit keyboard, and a year of AV protection. Unfortunately, these Next Class features add a considerable sum to the price; we like a cheaper yet similarly configured Asus K501J model better.... Lenovo C315 40221GU - Lenovo's C315 all-in-one is not without its flaws, but if you can overlook its comparatively slow day-to-day performance you'll find this a solid budget-priced home entertainment PC. Don't use this system for a home office or general productivity-oriented tasks, but it would work well in a small room for movie watching and game playing.... Sony VAIO J114FX (21.5 inch) - We like the idea of a Blu-ray-equipped all-in-one with a small footprint for home entertainment, but Sony badly missed the mark with the Vaio J114FX. In trying to make this system focused, Sony cut too many features. The result is that this PC is a terrible value relative to other all-in-ones in its price range.... Gateway FX6840-03E - The unique-looking Gateway FX6840-03e offers respectable productivity speed, but it's relatively limited in gaming and multimedia, which is ironic considering its flashy appearance. Gateway's FX line offers some strong configurations, but this isn't one of them, and you should look for more-complete PCs in this price range.... Dell Inspiron iM501R-1212PBL - We'd like the attractive and affordable Dell Inspiron iM501R-1212PBL more if it wasn't so slow and squeaky....
