Moving and Relocating RSS FeedsLearning languages - We (the British) have a notoriously bad reputation for not making an effort to learn the local language of places we plan to visit. I feel this is a shame but perhaps an understandable one because so many people overseas have a basic knowledge of English. Whenever I travel I try to familiar myself with at least some of the basics and do make a small effort once I'm there. I find this is usually well received, but that could be down to just utter amusement at my inability! ;) Do the rest of you always try to learn at least a little or do you not bother? Paul....Feed Source: www.aardvarktravel.net What are the virtues of where you live? - What are the virtues of where you live, from a visitor's perspective? Give a sentence or three on why you think people should visit where you currently live (even if you don't necessarily believe what you say pretend you were the tourism leader for your home town/city/region!).
The most imaginative / original / unique description wins errr something! (I'm just not sure what yet but we'll think of a small prize for the winner.) :)
Aaron.... Post your travel joke! - After Trev's Llanfair PG joke, I thought it would be a good idea for everyone to share any travel jokes they have here :D
Here's my offering:
A husband and wife are traveling by car from Key West to Boston.
After almost twenty-four hours on the road, they're too tired to continue, and they decide to stop for a rest. They stop at a nice hotel and take a room, but they only plan to sleep for four hours and then get back on the road.
When they check out four hours later, the desk clerk hands them a bill for $350. The man explodes and demands to know why the charge is so high. He tells the clerk although it's a nice hotel, the rooms certainly aren't worth $350. When the clerk tells him $350 is the standard rate, the man insists on speaking to the manager.
The manager listens to the man and then explains the hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center that were available for the husband and wife to use.... 'The Yellow Virus' - No, it's not some tropical virus you get when on holiday..
I've heard rumours around a new marketing tactic which could "potentially" ruin the web as we know it. I am not sure how true this is because I havent see it for my own eyes but wondered if anyone else had?
Basically, when you visit specific websites it downloads without you knowing a program on to your PC which results in you seeing website pages completly different, what the program does is replaces the links on the site you are viewing with yellow links which are directed through to websites which have signed up to advertise with a company called "ezula"
Read the forum and document www.ahfb2000.com/ezula/ezula.php if your interested to learn more. The cost of a beer where YOU are... - I suggested in another thread in this forum that the cost of a beer might be as good an indicator as any as to how affordable a location is to live in. How about we explore that idea a little further ?!
I know things vary enormously but let's assume we're dealing with a standard bottle (about half a pint) of standard beer in a standard bar !
And I appreciate certain countries don't allow alcohol, etc. - but let's try the concept out. Post your location, and any location you've been to, where you know what the approximate cost of a beer is at present. It's probably a good idea that we use the same currency - how about USD (to the nearest 50 cents)?
OK I'll set the ball rolling:
Kendal, England - 2.00 USD
Manchester, England - 2.50 USD
London, England - 3.50 USD
Barcelona, Spain - 2.50 USD
Prague, Czech Republic - 1.00 USD
Kangerlussuaq, Greenland - 4.... Best Way To Carry Money Abroad? - Okay, So. Here's the deal. I'll be traveling abroad within the next year. I have two questions. First off, would my Canadian debit card work, say..in the UK? My Grandmother went to Norway for a visit and apparantly hers worked there. Secondly, is getting a Visa worth it? I was told it was difficult, esspecially for a young person such as myself who has no credit score or history or anything of the sort. Should I go for a Visa or stick with travelers cheques? Any advice/ tips would be appreciated!! :)
